Moonyeen triathlon in Sogod today

CEBU, Philippines - Over a hundred triathletes, kids and adults alike, will compete in the third edition of the Sogod Mayor Moonyeen Durano-Streegan Triathlon Cup today at the Alegre Beach Resort.

Event organizer Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez, Jr. said they are expecting a maximum of 130 entries led by defending champion Noy Jopson in the men's open division.

The Moonyeen Cup has become a perfect tune-up race for those who will be taking part in the keenly-awaited Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines set on August 4 at Shangari-La's Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.

Aside from the adults, youngsters aged 14 years old and below will also strut their wares as part of their preparations for the Alaska Ironkids that will be held on the even of the Ironman.

The neophytes who are not joining in the Ironman can also enjoy the race as the Moonyeen Cup features the standard, sprint and mini sprint categories.

To make the action more exciting, the participants except the kids will be passing though a new route. They will deal with an L-shape swim course in Alegre that is about two meters above sea level, making it a beautiful start of the race.

The triathletes will then be racing on a newly-paved and smooth highway of Sogod and Catmon. This is where hundreds of cyclists and triathletes do their long rides during weekends preparatory for next month's big event in Mactan Island

The run part, on the other hand, will be done along the national road passing by the three-lined and shared perimeter wall of the M.Lhuillier property in Borbon.

Presented by the municipality of Sogod in partnership with Alegre Beach Resort and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP), the Moonyeen Cup is also also being supported by Cebu Governor Junjun Davide, Vice Governor Agnes A. Magpale, Smart Communications, Congressman Ace Durano, Rudy Project, Provincial Board Member Miguel Magpale, Jude Sybico and Ivy Durano-Meca, Borbon Mayor Butch Sepulveda, Danao City Sports Commission, Dan’s Bike Shop, Runnr in Ayala, The Brick Bike Shop, Cebu TV–Ato Ni, and Habagat.
