ALA-Cobra boxing show tomorrow night in Mandaue

Lemuel P. Maglinte - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - ALA Boxing Gym mainstay Melvin Gumban (13-0, 6KOs) will put his unbeaten record on the line as he takes on Fernando  ‘Batang Bato’ Ocon (10-4, 2KOs) in a non-title bout scheduled for 10 rounds headlining the ALA-Cobra Energy Drink:Tunay na Lakas Boxing this Saturday night at the Mandaue City Plaza Square.

Gumban, who hails from Escalante City in Negros Occidental, is coming off an impressive unanimous decision victory over Philippine flyweight champion Marjun Tabamo last February 23 in Tagbilaran City.

That win, without doubt, makes Gumban a rising star to watch out for.

However, Gumban has yet to prove his real worth as he battles Ocon from the RWS Stable of Cebuano topnotch promoter Rex "Wakee" Salud.

Experience wise, Ocon has a slight advantage over Gumban having fought three times already abroad including against Indonesian Tommy Seran. He lost though by split decision in their WBO Asia-Pacific light flyweight title bout late last year in Kupang, Indonesia.

In the supporting main event of the slambang show that is open to the public for free, former Phl flyweight contender Aroel Romasasa will slug it out with Pedro Balaba, while Juren Labordo will mix it up with Rowell Garcia.

The rest of the card features Rey Morales vs. Renante Suacasa; Lito Dante vs. Rez Padrogane; Brian Lobitania vs. Rocky Alvarez; and Ivor Lastrilla vs. Takaoki Noma.

The official weigh-in for the said card will take place today at Pacific Mall in Mandaue. (FREEMAN)
