Don Bosco bags 2 titlesin Aboitiz Cup bootfest

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Don Bosco Technology Center settled for two titles out of the five championship matches it had in the 15th Aboitiz Cup football tournament yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Brgy. Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

DBTC's bets in the players 8 division set up the fire for their school’s quest for supremacy by shutting out Bright Academy, 3-0, in their one-sided final match.

DBTC’s players 10 squad followed suit, winning the championship in its age-group after eking out a 3-2 triumph over the gritty Canduman side.

Among those who knocked in goals for DBTC in the players 10 were Rena Yaian at the 10th, Joaquin Buyco at the 27th and Paul Mapula at the 31st. Those who delivered in a losing effort for Canduman were Christian Carizon and Adrian Pitogo.

The Bosconians, however, faltered in the other category, losing to Giuseppe FC, 1-2, in their gold medal match under the boys 12 bracket. Joshua Shield sank the game-winning goals for Giuseppe.

The title-hungry Paref-Springdale also got what it wanted after being banned last year, pulling of a 3-2 cliffhanger in the penalty shootout over DBTC to clinch the boys 14 crown.

Ryan Haosen unloaded the first goal for Springdale with just three minutes gone by in the game, while Sabin Veloso added another goal at the 35th. The Bosconians bounced back with savvy behind the efforts of Moiselle Alforque and Agustin Roa to knot the count at 2-2.

Mario Lorenzo Ceniza, however, rose to the occasion and sealed Springdale’s nerve-tingling victory at the 72nd minute.

The University of San Carlos (USC) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu grabbed part of the limelight after collecting a title each.

USC reigned supreme in the lone girls 17 division crown with a 4-0 rout of SHS-AdC.

Mailyn Lozano proved too hot to handle for USC, cashing in a golden hat-trick at the 5th, 34th and 70th. Jesusseane Gerobiesse nailed USC's other goal at the 27th.

SHS-AdC, on the other hand, ruled the boys 17 class after scoring a 1-0 win over DBTC, thanks to Miguel Kwan for finding the back of the net during a penalty shot at the 30th.

The 15th Aboitiz Cup ends today with three championship matches at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation will try to snatch the under-23 title it missed last year when it takes on the University of Southern Philippines Foundation at 8 am. while Hiroshi FC will tackle ERCO FC in the  38-above final at 10am.

Hiroshi also hopes to unseat defending champion Queen City United FC as they clash head-on in the men's open final at 1:30 pm. (FREEMAN)
