GUV Cup semis starts today

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The semifinal round of the 2012 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup takes place today at the Cebu International Convention Center.

The kiddies division will play first, with group A’s no.1 squad Compostela going up against group B’s no.2 Moalboal.

Defending kiddies champion Mandaue will take on Catmon in the next semifinal duel.

Mandaue faces the same opponent in the crossover semis of the women's division. The other match features last year’s runner-up Talisay against Lilo-an.

In the men's bracket, the Mandaue spikers inched closer to securing a semis ticket after nailing their second straight win at the expense of Toledo City, 25-21, 25-16.

Mandaue, thus, joined Carcar on top of the leaderboard with identical 2-0 win-loss records.

As of this writing last night, Mandaue was scheduled to play two games against Sta. Fe and Carcar.

Sta. Fe, on the other hand, finally savored victory in three outings. After bowing to Mandaue and Carcar, Sta. Fe bounced back with a three-set win over Moalboal, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22.

In group A, Liloan shared the driver's seat with Talisay with similar 2-0 cards. Liloan claimed its second win at the expense of Asturias, 25-12, 25-20.

Like Sta. Fe, Bantayan snapped out of its two-game slump after outsmarting Ronda,25-12, 25-18. (FREEMAN)
