World Shoto Cup 2012 Phl upbeat on title chances

CEBU, Philippines - The Filipino karatekas carry on their backs a herculean mission of defending their turf with flying colors as action in the 2nd International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) World Shoto Cup 2012 finally kicks off today at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Brgy.Lahug, this City.

ISKF Philippines President Dr. Benjamin Jan Villamayor has expressed confidence on their chances of winning the overall title although it would be a tall order for them as they are ranged against the top karate masters all over the world.

Of the 13 participating countries, Phl fields in the biggest delegation composed of 90 athletes followed by South Africa with 67 and defending champion United States with 46.

The other nations taking part in the two-day tilt are Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iran, Argentina, Lebanon, India, Germany, Egypt and Israel.

“We have a strong team and we hope for the best,” said Villamayor in a press conference yesterday at the Coral room of the plush hotel. “We have the biggest number of participants, this does not guarantee our victory but I can say that we have the best of the best in our team.”

For her part, Cathy Cline of the Western Washington Shotokan Karate Club said that compared to the inaugural edition of the quadrennial meet held in Canada, it would be a very entertaining and close contest.

The categories to be contested are the juniors (8 to 17 years old), adult (18-44) and seniors (45-above) in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) events.

The tournament will adopt the Shubo Ippon system wherein a player has to score the first two points to win in the kumite.

The country with the most number of gold medals won will be declared as champion. (FREEMAN)
