Spectacular "Palabas" to usher in UV Intramurals

CEBU, Philippines - In keeping with its customary ways, a grand “Palabas” will usher in the formal opening of the University of the Visayas (UV) Intramurals on September 5.

Prior to the keenly-awaited showdown of UV talents on various fronts, a holy mass will be celebrated at 7 am at the school's Teresita Square.

A simple program will follow to be graced by UV Assistant Vice President for Finance and Administration Gerald Anthony "Samsam" V. Gullas, Jr. He will deliver an inspirational message as well as formally declare the four-day tournament open.

The grand "Palabas" showdown will surely add glitz and glamour to the affair.

The school's Filipiniana Dance Troupe under the behest of Angelo Manapsal will render a production number, while the decorated UV Gymnastics Team of hardworking coach Darlene Castañeda-De la Pisa will showcase their breath-taking stunts that is truly worth watching for.

To spice up the show, the Drum and Bugle of the Visayanians under the baton of Angelo Vega will perform a must-see fancy drill.

The other highlights of the kick-off salvo is the cheerdance competition and the selection of the Mr. and Ms. Intramurals.

Ball games will immediately commence in the afternoon along with the Speech Fest that includes the extemporaneous speaking, declamation, oration and story telling contests at Inday Pining's Teatro. The essay writing and spelling contest will be at the Language Center.

Scrabble, chess, taekwondo and karatedo will start on September 6 as well as the academic quizzes, vocal solo, duel and balak competition.

Swimming and track and field events will be contested on September 7.

At 5 pm on the same day, the Visayanian community will surely walk down memory lane as there will be an Acoustic show to rekindle the wonderful works of the past Visayan artists and musicians.

The championship of other events will take place on September 8, the very same day wherein the Roman Catholic disciples celebrate the feast of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. (FREEMAN)
