CEBU, Philippines - The cloudy skies and the on and off gloomy weather did not stop Sunshine Baraquiel from turning in the best score yet in the 49th Southern Ladies Golf Tournament at the Cebu Country Club, which earned her a tie of the lead going into today’s final round.
Baraquiel of Manila Southwoods, carded four-under-par 58 points in the Molave System to share the lead with opening round pacesetter Princess Superal of ICTSI. Both have two-day totals of 112 points.
Birdies on the 1st, 6th, 12th, and 17th were the highlights of Baraquiel’s flawless performance on the second day of the three-day competition, which is hosted by the Ladies Chapter of CCC and also backed by Shemberg Marketing.
The co-leaders are at least five points clear of the rest of the field.
On solo third is Jayvie Agojo also of ICTSI with a two-day total of 107 points on rounds of 52 and 55.
The Molave Points System awards seven points for a double-eagle, six for an ace, five for eagle, four for birdie, three for par, two for bogey, and one for double-bogey.
On solo fourth is ICTSI’s Sarah Ababa with 106 points (50-56) while tied for fifth are ICTSI’s Lovelyn Guioguio (52-53) and Alta Vista’s Ericka Julianne Lim (53-52) with 105 points apiece.
Lim, an incoming junior high school student at Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, continued to be the best performer among the Cebuana entries.
The best placed among all Cebuana bets was, however, Hannah Wong of CCC, who paces class A with a two-day aggregate of 94 points on rounds of 46 and 48.
Running second for the handicap class is Seo Yon Kwon of Riviera with 90 points (48-42) followed by Sofia Chabon of Del Monte with 87 (42-45).
Mactan’s Rachel Burlas and Gie Bote of Tagaytay Highlands are tied for fourth with 81 points apiece.
In class B, Violeta Pegels of Forest Hills seized the lead with her total of 82 points on rounds of 42 and 40.
Alta Vista’s Junia Gabasa is only two points back at second shooting rounds of 44 and 36 points. At third is Cebu Country Club’s Eva Hino with 76 points (39-37) followed by teammate Lalay Lava with 72.
CCC’s Bae Jung Ja leads class C with 72 points (45-27) followed by Aguinaldo’s Leni Cabili and Forest Hills’ Anli Wu with 69 points apiece. Mactan’s Genelyn Inot is two points further back with 67.
Davao’s Rohelyn Revilleza paces class D with 60 points followed by Mary Ang and Evelyn Alcantara both of Forest Hills with 56 and 51 points respectively.
Seniors’ division
In the seniors’ class, Violeta Pegels has the lead with her two-day total of 84 points.
On second is Leni Cabili with 82 while Eva Hino and Mary Ang are tied for third with 74 points apiece.
Rounding up the top five is Gie Bote with 71.
Team competition
Forest Hills emerged as champion of the two-day team competition that used the Modified Stableford Scoring System.
The team composed of Mary Ang, Evelyn Alcantara, Violeta Pegels, and Anli Wu had an aggregate of 246 points on rounds of 128 and 188 in the four-to-play, three-to-count format to run away with the crown.
Second place went to host CCC Mango with 227 points on rounds of 124 and 103. The team was composed of Hannah Wong, Ryoko Nagai, Bae Jun Ja, and Lalay Lava.
Third place went to Aguinaldo Tres Marias with 219 beating ICTSI in the countback. The team was composed of Anita Salivio, Matet Salivio, and Leni Cabili. (FREEMAN)
