Cebu teams in final

CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano squads, X-Men and Avengers, booked championship tickets after fending off their respective opponents at the penultimate day of the Merida Mayor’s Cup Volleyball Open Championship yesterday at Merida Sports Complex in Leyte.

X-Men pummeled Avengers on the first day, 25-14, 25-17 and later trounced Team Isabel, 25-21, 25-17 and Broncho, 25-14, 15-19. Team X-Men was powered by the University of San Carlos (USC) stalwarts. The Avengers, on the other hand, bounced back as they overpowered Broncho, 25-18, 25-17.

They later thumped Isabel in a three-setter battle, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 and beat Merida in dominating fashion, 25-5, 25-6.

The battle for third place will feature the Leyte bets Broncho against Isabel, which will be followed by the championship match between X-Men and Avengers.

Aside from trophies and medals, the champion will be pocketing P20,000 while the second and third placers will have P15,000 and P10,000, respectively.  (FREEMAN)
