CEBU, Philippines - The first title defense of interim IBF light flyweight champion Johnriel ‘Quadro Alas’ Casimero has been moved to make way for the World Boxing Organization flyweight title defense of Brian Viloria against former Mexican champion Omar Nino Romero on May 12 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Metro Manila.
In an interview with The FREEMAN, SGG Sports Promotions big boss Sammy Gello-ani said that he has decided to move the fight to June, one month after Viloria’s title defense.
Casimero’s title defense against Mexican toughie Sammy ‘Gutty’ Gutierrez was originally scheduled on May 13 in the afternoon at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, but Gello-ani believed that moving it will be good for the promotion of his event and also for the boxing fans.
“I don’t want the two boxing event to be so close in date, Viloria-Romero bout is a big event and I don’t want that to affect my promotion,” said Gello-ani. “But I think this will do good for both boxing event and also for the boxing fans.”
Gello-ani added that they are still choosing between Waterfront Hotel and Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City to be the venue for the fight.
Casimero won the IBF title last February 11 against Argentinean boxer Luis Lazarte via 10th round round technical knockout in Argentina.
The fight became notorious as one of the biggest boxing brawls in the history as angry Argentinean boxing fans attacked, threw chairs and bottles to Team Casimero.
Aside from Casimero, also scheduled to fight in June is former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona. – (FREEMAN)
