Gesta eyes easy win vs. Cuero

- Lemuel P. Maglinte -

CEBU, Philippines - With bigger fights coming his way, unbeaten lightweight contender Mercito ‘ No Mercy’ Gesta (24-0, 12KOs) vowed to score an easy win against Colombian Oscar Cuero (15-7, 12KOs) when they clash in the ring on April 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Gesta-Cuero duel is in the undercard of the Brandon Rios-Richard Abril showdown for the vacant WBA lightweight championship.

Considered by Top Rank Inc. big boss Bob Arum as the next big thing from the Philippines, Gesta will once again try to impress the boxing world following his dominant victory against Mexican Ricardo Dominguez last November in Las Vegas.

After their training camp in San Diego, California, Mercito together with his father Anecito and US-based Filipino trainer Vince Parra flew to Las Vegas to wrap up their preparations.

“We are 100% ready,” said Anecito. “We trained two months for this fight and I see a big chance that my son (Mercito) will deliver a knockout win against Cuero.”

“I can say that Cuero will not last 10 rounds because I am a witness on how Mercito shows his power against bigger guys that he sparred in the gym.”

The pride of Brgy. Labogon, Mandaue City is one of the fighters under the radar of some big names including three-division Mexican world champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Marquez manager Fernando Beltran admitted earlier that the Mexican superstar is interested in facing Gesta in July in a light welterweight match.

“We are glad with the news that Marquez is the one asking to fight my son and we are ready to climb to 140 pounds for that fight to happen,” said the older Gesta.

Aside from Marquez, Gesta is also open for a match against the undefeated Rios.— (FREEMAN)
