Holy Week

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

I’d like to think that we could take time off from our busy schedule for the next several days (only two days for us in the newspaper industry), but it seems that there is no respite for some.

Luckily for me, I still get to spend the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday with family members to take part in religious activities in my town or at the parish where my wife’s family belongs.

Although I am not the religious type, it is always good to spend this time with the Lord and with loved ones.

When I was much younger, the Holy Week was a time when there wasn’t anything being aired on TV and the radio stations only had the dramas with the common theme of people changing for the better.

Since the religious activities like processions happen late in the afternoon, the rest of your waking hours were spent on doing other things except playing since our elders would not allow us to run around.

There were also not too many chores to do as life somehow also slows down during the Lenten season, except in our family kitchen where there was always a huge pot of hot binignit for all of us to enjoy.

If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, it is now just eight days prior to A Shot at Life, the golf tournament of UP Cebu High School Batch ’84.

The tickets are only P2,000 each and covers not only the green fee and giveaways, but also the snacks, dinner, raffles and caddie fee.

You can get in touch with this deadline beater for more information about the event.

Several other members of the UP Cebu High School community, although not from batch ’84 like me, are coming forward to help out.

This event is open to everyone and not exclusive to the alumni.

While we pause for the Holy Week, the first Major of the year teed off last night at Augusta National in Atlanta, Georgia – the Masters.

It is too early to tell if the much-hyped Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy rivalry would indeed happen in this tournament, but I’m sure many are looking forward to seeing some great action from the world’s best players.

Tiger has 14 Majors under his belt. The three other Major golf tournaments, for those who don’t know or don’t have the time to check it on Google are the British Open, the US Open, and the PGA Championship.

Tiger aims to beat the record of 18 Majors of Jack Nicklaus. His resurgence after 30 months of failing to win an event is seen by Tiger’s fans as the signal that he is back.

Personally, I hope to see Tiger wear the Green Jacket again come Monday (Philippine time).
