Mata rules open division of Madridejos chessfest

CEBU, Philippines - Gerold Mata outpointed Aldrin Bacolod to rule the open division of the Alfonso Dondon, Sr. Memorial Chess Tournament the other day at the Madridejos town hall in the municipality of Madridejos, Bantayan Island.

Bacolod took the second place honors, while Regelito Hortillano, Ramon Gidayawan, Wentex Santillan and Deomedes Pacifico completed the top six finishers.

In the high school level, Elaila Mae Monsalud took home the gold medal after edging out Juvy Caratao and Jason Rey Sarabia, who copped the second and third place honors.

Jethro Benedict Pacifico stole part of the limelight after reigning supreme in the elementary division. Joshua Bacolod landed at second followed by Ellah Mae Gervacio.

Elaila Mae Monsalud and Ellah Mae Gervacio also bagged special awards as the top female performer and youngest player, respectively.

Cash prizes, medals, and certificates of recognition were handed out to the winners of the tournament that was made possible through the support of Edwin Monsalud of the Regional Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (RBJMP)-Bantayan District Jail and LA Madridejos-USA International Group.

Aside from chess, the other sporting events featured in the Madridejos Summer League 2012 are mountainbike, volleyball, basketball, soccer and table tennis.

Johnny Sevillejo dominated the mountainbike race, with Erwin Paras and Arnel Paras occupying the next two spots.

The Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) Spiking Skyblazers posted a 1-3 finish in volleyball competition. The Go Girls of Brgy. Patao snared the second place trophy. - THE FREEMAN
