CEBU, Philippines - Carl Almario leads the list of winners in this year’s Tournament of Aces, the annual club championships of Alta Vista Golf and Country Club.
Almario bagged the class A title by beating Victor Gocela in their 36-hole final match.
The champion was ranked 6th after the stroke play eliminations and beat third-ranked Alex Yeo in the quarterfinals, 5-up with 4 holes to go. He then disposed of seventh seed Kim Kwang Seok in the semifinals, 1-up to arrange the match with Gocela, skipper of the Alta Vista team in the PAL Interclub.
The class B crown went to Ed Acain, who beat Jun Dayot in the final match, 4 and 2. Acain was ranked 5th in the eliminations then beat Boy Gonzalez in the quarterfinals. He stopped topseed Gerry Quintos in the semis.
Pete del Rosario topped class C with a 2 and 1 win over Jun Tolentino. Del Rosario was ranked 6th in the eliminations and defeated Patrick King in the quaterfinals.
In the semifinals, he beat Pete Flores, 1-up, to make it to the final match.
In the seniors’ division, Razy Razon coasted to the title with a commanding 8 and 6 win over Tony Amor in the 18-hole final. Razon made it to the matchplay round after finishing second in the strokeplay qualifier.
He beat Jun Zosa in the quarterfinals and then stopped Mar Selma in the semis.
The super seniors’ title went to Rolly Santos, who beat Ben Villamor in the final match. Santos had a walkover win over David Villono in the quarterfinals and then pulled past Rod Señido in the semis.
The ladies division crown went to incoming high school junior Ericka Lim, who stopped defending champion Choi Yi Hwa in the 36-hole final match.
Lim drew a bye in the quarterfinals and then stopped Alyeska Yunam in the semis, 1-up.
The winners of the tournament will be receiving their trophies and championship jackets during the club’s annual member-guest event this May dubbed as The View Invitational. (FREEMAN)
