CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras hope to improve their fifth place finish last year as they head into the opening conference of the 9th Shakey’s V-League on April 15 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
SWU chief strategist Jordan Paca said as early as last month, they have already stated their rigid training regimen under the watchful eyes of their consultant Sammy Acaylar, who is also the current head coach of the Philippine women's team.
“Our goal this season is to advance into the semifinals. We did not make it last year that why we are aiming high this time," said Paca.
To accomplish that mission, the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) grandslam champion will count on the star powers of Danika Yolanda Gendrauli, Princess Anne Pido, Raphril Aguilar, Lorie May Layno, Marlyn LLagoso, Anna Bennova Sabanal, Charie Mae Diane Liaz, Fretzie Aligway and Nerissa Villanueva.
To bolster their offensive arsenal, SWU will tap the services of two guest players from the Phl Team as well as five reinforcements in Cha Cruz, Jacqueline Alarca, Nica Guliman, Jean manzano and Jovelyn Gonzaga.
“We have chosen our imports based on the position that is lacking in the team,” Paca said. “Hopefully, we will be able to reap the fruit of our hardwork. As of now, I can see the performance of my players have greatly improved," he added.
Last season, SWU plucked victories over San Sebastian College (SSC) Lady Stags and Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws but could only land at the top five.
It would be another uphill climb for the Lady Cobras as standing in their way to glory are six-time champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tigresses and the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Lady Eagles. (FREEMAN)
