Jaro pulls stunning upset Dethrones Pongsaklek to win WBC flyweight title
CEBU, Philippines - Another Filipino boxer basked in the glow of world championship glory. And he did it in style.
In one of the most stunning upsets in recent memory, Sonny Boy Jaro dethroned longtime champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam via a splendid sixth round stoppage to snatch the World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title yesterday in Chonburi, Thailand.
It was truly a monumental feat for the underdog Jaro as he was up against the world's No. 8 pound-for-pound fighter Pongsaklek, who was recently named as “WBC Fighter of the Decade.”
Pongsaklek held the WBC flyweight belt several times since winning it first with a first round stoppage of Cebuano Malcolm "Eagle Eye" Tuñacao on March 2, 2001 in Phichit, Thailand.
According to a report by philboxing.com, Jaro immediately jumped the gun of Pongsaklek, knocking down the heavily favored Thai champ in the first round with a solid right uppercut to the head.
Jaro, who hails from Silay City, Negros Occidental, again scored a knockdown in the third round when he caught Pongsaklek with a right straight.
Jaro sustained his blazing offensive in round six where he unleashed a flurry of telling blows to send Pongsaklek down on the canvas for good.
Jaro, who improved his record to 34-10-5 spiked with 24KOs, is now the sixth Pinoy world title-holder after Many Pacquiao, Brilan Viloria, Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes and Johnriel Casimero. (FREEMAN)
