Thirsty for fields

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

We have another Thirsty weekend coming as the second and final week of the Thirsty Cup Football Festival takes place today.

I saw the pictures of last weekend’s event and if there is one thing that we obviously need here, it is a field than would not immediately get muddy when it rains.

I’m sure that with all the pounding the field got last weekend, it would need some time to get it back into shape.

With the interest on football continuing to grow, we need to also have more playing areas to accommodate the number of players.

The Thirsty Cup set the tone for festival-type events in Cebu. It as through this event that other sponsors have realized how much the Cebuanos love the game and how many people can gather in one venue here for the world’s number one sport.

There are still much that need to be done to make Cebu a better place for football. We have already taken many steps forward for the good of the sport. I hope we won’t allow politics to push us backward.

If local government units can help clear areas for football fields that can also be used for outdoor sports that would be a great help.

The LGUs need not wait for people, who will organize things for them, before taking any action.

By clearing fields for the people of all ages to play, the LGUs will soon see groups of individuals going to them to present plans and programs for organized activities.

Build the field first and the players will come.

The performance of the Cebu teams in the seniors’ tournament of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub in Davao seems to be giving us a lot of good reasons to smile.

While I am still covering the event from hundreds of kilometers away, it doesn’t seem to much of a hassle trying to call people to check the scores and get the interviews done.

I’ll have better access to the results tomorrow and will bring you more action of the PAL Interclub especially for the men’s regular event.

Way up north of the country in Baguio City the alumni of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) are gathered this weekend for the annual homecoming.

After making it last year, I was hoping to do it again this year, but I learned some valuable lessons from last year’s experience.

The first and foremost that I learned was that sleeping on buses and airplanes would not beat a few hours of Zzzs on a real bed.

With both the PAL Interclub and the homecoming held at the same time, it is very difficult for an aging body to travel from Baguio City down to Manila by bus then by plane to Cebu and then another plane to the venue of the golf event all in one day.

Maybe next year then!
