PSC to give CCSC monthly support

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will be allocating P65,000 monthly financial assistance to the Cebu City Sports Commision (CCSC) in support of its grassroots development program.

“The amount may just be minimal but at least it would somehow help the program [of CCSC] especially to the volunteers who gave their services to the kids for free,” said PSC chairman Ritchie Garcia.

“We don’t want to change anything on CCSC’s program because obviously, it’s really working out. We will just support them,” Garcia added.

Through the spirit of volunteerism advocated by CCSC through its hardworking chairman Edward Hayco, Cebu City has established a Guinness record for the "World Biggest Dance Class" with close to 8,000 participants three years.

As a follow-up to that landmark feat, CCSC has attracted 43,000 entries in its attempt to break another Guinness record for the "World's Largest Chess Tournament" last month.

Garcia said when he visited one of the schools here in the Queen City of the South, he was able to see the great impact made by CCSC’s grassroots program especially to the young ones.

“I was impressed by these kids who already have the basics in different sporting events. Instead of staying in the streets, they started to indulge themselves in sports,” said CCSC.

So impressed by the manner that CCSC run the sports affairs of the City that the PSC invited the city of Cebu as one of the resource agencies in the 1st PSC-LGU Summit on February 24 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

“We would like to show to other local government units kung ano ang ginagawa ng Cebu City for them to duplicate the things that should be done,” said Garcia.

Hayco, for his part, said they are very happy that their efforts were recognized by the PSC.

“It’s Cebu City’s humble contribution to the country because we believe in nation building through sports. Proudly made in Cebu! Proud to be volunteers! They made us as a model in implementing the grassroots program, which is a great honor for all of us, especially to the volunteers,” said Hayco. (FREEMAN)
