Queen City breaks ice in UFL
CEBU, Philippines - Queen City United Football Club of Cebu broke into the win column for the first time in Division 2 of the United Football League yesterday.
The Cebuanos drubbed Laos Football Club, 2-0, at the University of Makati Field in Makati City.
“Daug na gyud ta,” (We have won at last) said Raffy Musni, one of the team officials when he called The Freeman after the match.
QCU now has a total of 4 points after three games owing to a record of 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss.
After a scoreless first half, Queen City United found the back of the net on the 65th minute in what was regarded as an own goal for Laos FC.
Coach Mario Ceniza told The Freeman that Junnard Aguilar’s attempt hit a Laos defender and the ball ricocheted into the goal as the goalie came forward to try to block the shot.
Ten minutes later, Queen City scored an insurance goal courtesy of Rommel Cuizon, who banged in a cross from Dan Villarico.
Musni said that the team is in very high spirits since this is their first win in the UFL since participating late last year.
Queen City failed to make it to the premiere First Division after losing all matches in the UFL Cup.
The team is currently ranked seventh among 12 teams, but Ceniza is hopeful that they can move up as they are behind one game.
The first match of the team, which was set last January 15 was rescheduled on the request of the Cebuanos due to the Sinulog celebration.
In their first game, last January 21, QCU held Diliman Victory Liner FC to a 1-1 draw. Diliman Victory Liner, which has 10 points, is now the Division 2 leader with three wins to add to their draw.
The second game of the Cebuanos was a 1-2 loss to Aguila FC. Aguila is currently on sixth position with six points.
Ceniza said that there are 19 more games to play for QCU as this is a double-round robin format. (FREEMAN)
