CHECK Under-16 chessfest on today

CEBU, Philippines - Young Cebuano pawnpushers are set to converge today as the 1st Chess Enthusiasts in Cebu for Kids (CHECK) 16-Under Tournament fires off today in Brgy. Tabunok, Talisay City.

Felix Balbona, one of the event organizers, said their main objective in holding the competition is to develop potential players in Cebu.

“We're planning to hold a monthly tournament for the age-group category and hopefully we'll make it a weekly event,” said Balbona.

“The prizes are just minimal but these kids are not up to the prize. What they are after of is the enjoyment in playing the sport and most importantly they will improve their skills. If we have monthly or weekly tournament for them, I’m pretty sure that there will be great improvement when they will compete nationally,” Balbona added.

Aside from trophies and medals, the champion will pocket P1,000, while the second and third will receive P700 and P500, respectively. The fourth to 10th placers will get a consolation prize of P100 each.

Entry fee is pegged at P60. Those who are interested to join have only until this 12nn to register. (FREEMAN)
