- Syril G. Repe -

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines  – The city of Dumaguete in cooperation with the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, will host the 2012 PLDT-ABAP Visayas Championships from January 24 to 30 at Robinson’s Place here.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria called for a meeting the other day with the department heads of the City Hall who are involved in the preparation of the said event.

According to City Sports Consultant Joe Guirit, the competition is the largest this year, with the no less than 150 boxers from different parts in Visayans expected to participate.

Guirit added that the participants will be arriving on January 25.

On the other hand, ABANO President Virgilio Umbac said a seminar workshop for referees and coaches will be held on January 23.

The week-long slugfest is expected to add to the development of the economy of the city.

Guirit said the program is a grassroots initiative of the governing body in amateur boxing of the country to discover potential talents who can represent the country in international competitions.

Aspiring pugilists from Visayas will get a chance to prove their worth as they compete in the premier amateur boxing tilt in the country.

The National Championships will be held in Tagbilaran City next month.  (FREEMAN)
