Sick call

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The hectic schedule of the past week and the Sinulog Grand Parade last Sunday finally took their toll on this deadline beater.

Next year, I’ll work hard to be better prepared for the action and for the fatigue and the changes in the weather.

I hope that a day’s rest and an extra dose of supplements are enough to be up and going again.

The reason why many come to the Coral Invitational of Cebu Country Club is that it is a lot of fun.

Although our first round last Friday was three holes short of a complete round due to a sudden downpour late in the afternoon, the company of my partner Takashi Tanaka, president of Toyoflex Corporation and our flightmates Nakashio Haruo and his partner Miguel Chiong of Cagayan de Oro somewhat uplifted our spirits despite the rain.

Our scores did not exactly land us among the top teams of the tournament, but just being there somewhat was good enough for now.

It would be great to have a trophy to bring home the next time.

The Ladies Chapter of Cebu Country Club has always been an active participant in the club’s annual member-guest tournament.

The ladies are not among the players, but they serve as the starters, markers, and have a group that receives the scores of the players.

I remember the time when I was only starting to write golf stories and the Titas from the ladies chapter were always very helpful in providing information not only for their tournaments, but also for the Coral.

Truly, this is proof that behind every success of the male members, the ladies chapter is there to support them.

No matter how good one thing is, if there is too much, it can be bad.

This is the case for the running scene in Cebu where races are held every weekend with several being held on the same day.

Running has become very popular the past few years that no matter how many races are being held, they still manage to get participants to sign up.

Since there are events that seem to have put the safety of the participants in peril, it is only proper for the City of Cebu to step in and regulate these running events.

Aside from complaints about traffic, what really concerns me more is how some organizers don’t bother to properly clean up their water stations and the start/finish area after the race.

The move to limit the number of races and not to allow two races to be held on the same day, will also mean more quality events for the running enthusiasts to join.

While some organizers don’t like the move, I believe this is the right thing to do if we want to sustain the popularity of running events.
