Two teams hold provisional lead

- Nimrod NL Quiñones -

CEBU, Philippines - Two teams share the provisional lead going to the final day of the 31st Coral invitational at the rain-soaked Cebu Country club.

The tandem of Jack Jamero and Jepthe Romea fired a total of 161 points on rounds of 80 and 81 and are tied with Koichi Horii and Akio Ueda, who made 82 and 79 points.

The tournament uses the Modified Stableford Scoring System where a double-eagle is worth ssix points, and ace is five, an eagle 4, birdie is 3, par 2, and bogey is 1.

Jamero fired 39 points yesterday while Romea made 42 points.

Horii shot 42 while Ueda made 37.

One point back is the all-lawyer tandem of Tito Pintor and Marlou Cugtas with a total of 160 points on rounds of 78 and 82. Pintor shot 43 yesterday while Cugtas had 39.

Three points behind is the team of Jojo Flordelis and Joey Villarosa with 157 on rounds of 82 and 75. Flordelis made 38 yesterday while Villarosa had 37.

Also with 157 was the team of Jojo Alquizola and Calvin Serion on rounds of 83 and 74. Alquizola fired 34 yesterday while Serion had 40.

Jon Joseph Alvarez and Fernando Zaldarriaga have a total of 156 points on rounds of 76 and 80. Alvarez fired 42 yesterday while Zaldarriaga had 38.

Also with 156 were the teams of Jack Limyutian and Alberto Solis firing rounds of 81 and 75 and Ernesto Siguan and Doli Cabahug with 79 and 77 points.

Limyutian fired 38 points yesterday while Solis made 37. Siguan shot 37 on the second round while Cabahug made 40.

Tied with 153 points apiece are the teams of San Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy and Dennis Canoy with rounds of 76 and 77, that of Charlie Go and Guilbert Purcia with 83 and 70, and Boy Dagondon and Junie Enriquez with 78 and 75.

First round pacesetters Jonji Chiongbian and Gassy Lizares, who fired a combined 84 points on rounds of 44 and 40, will play their final round today.

Chiongbian and Lizares were the leaders after the first round and not Jovi Neri and Baltaire Balangauan, due to a mix up in the handicaps.

Balangauan was erroneously listed as having scored 54 points on the first round, which was due to the fact that the handicap used to compute his score was that of his father. When the score was adjusted, he made only four-under-par 40 points.

Several flights also failed to complete their round yesterday when heavy rain fell at shortly past 5 p.m.

Among the flights that were affected were that of this writer, who is paired with Takashi Tanaka, president of Toyoflex Corporation and that of Nakashio Haruo and partner Miguel Chiong.

The final round will be played today and the awards ceremony will immediately follow at the CCC ballroom.
