Cebu Rugby Low Flyers beat Dragons, 8-3
CEBU, Philippines - The Low Flyers beat the Dragons, 8-3, in the first Dragons Challenge of this year at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue.
The organizers decided to implement the new league system for last Saturday’s match and did a Dragons’ Challenge instead.
The wet condition of the playing surface caused by the rain over the weekend gave the Low Flyers a big advantage since it was suited to their heavier built.
More than the playing field’s condition though, the Low Flyers backs also played smart rugby, keeping ball in hand and directing play back into the forward pack even dominating the fourth quarter.
Individually, the players who did the most impressive performances include William Harris, Vicente Brocas, Cam Booth and father-and-son Henri and Cesar Delorme.
This Saturday, organizers of the event hope to finally implement the new Cebu League System.
In the new system, all the Dragons, Low Flying Dragons and Komodo Dragons have been mixed in together to create three squads.
The first league will be 10-a-side with each team fighting against each other and then a grand final.
The three team captains are Jerry Branzuela, Chenzo Flor and Jong Chiu.
Branzuela’s team is composed of Bruno Aleoget, Matt Aspegren, Henri Delorme, Jentro Estimo, Tip Fraser, Simon Hoyle, Rodney Kandie, and Yoann Nohe.
Flor’s team, on the other hand, is composed of Damien Allison, Trey Bishop, Bob Booth, Tony Jarman, Mark MacDonald, Max Muller, Dave Shields, and Alasdair Watt.
Under Chiu’s team are Cam Booth, Vicente Brocas, Gary Cochran, Dave Harris, Kevin Peeke, Mark Reeves, and Nils Toussaint.
Should there be more players on the next battle, another team will be formed.
Aside from the second match of the year, Philippine Rugby Football Union’s Matt Cullen will be witnessing the event.
Cullen’s visit, however, is mainly to discuss rugby development in the region. – (FREEMAN)
