FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

Before anything else, I would like to call all members of PMA Sambisig class 1991, who are based in Cebu to attend our fellowship activity tonight to be hosted by Cdr. Doy Punzalan of the Coast Guard.

Details have been posted on the class page on Facebook and the activity starts at 1900H.

I found myself with several hours to spare late yesterday morning and used the time well by watching the semifinal games of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup at the Summit Hall of the Cebu International Convention Center.

I caught the action of the grassroots or the elementary category pitting favorite Catmon against Moalboal.

Catmon scored an easy win in the first set, but Moalboal took the second to forge a decider and then won the third.

What really amazed me was seeing how these kids, who are aged 12 years old and below are playing volleyball like they were many years older than they are.

This is just the first year that the grassroots category was introduced and it seems to have produced very good results.

After that game, I caught three sets of the semifinal battle between Mandaue City and Liloan.

I learned that Mandaue won the match in four sets and earned a ticket to the championship against Talisay City.

If you want to watch topnotch volleyball action head on to the CICC today for the finals of the 7th GUV Cup.

At 9 a.m. will be the men’s championship game to be followed by the women’s final at 1 p.m. and the grassroots championship game at 3 p.m.

This year’s GUV Cup seems to have been one that has been very eventful. I hope that the kinks that were encountered this year would be ironed out and we will see the tournament continue to flourish.

With Cebu declared as the volleyball capital of the country, I hope to see more private sector participation in 2012 and the years to come.

With all the good players that we are developing here, it would be great to have a Cebu Open Volleyball Championship in the very near future.

I hope the weather improves today as Kartzone is holding a 6-hour endurance race starting this 10 a.m.

A team or four karters and one media guest shall be allowed to use only one kart for the entire duration.

Lord Seno, who is the sporting director of Kartzone, called me a few days ago to ask if I could join them and how can I say no to my ‘buddy’ who once used his driving skills to rush me to the hospital.

See you Buds!
