Mandaue slams Alegria in GUV Cup

CEBU, Philippines - Defending women’s champion Mandaue City got off to a flying start in the quarterfinal round of the 7th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup yesterday at the Summit Hall of Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

The Mandauehanons crushed Alegria in dominating fashion, 25-13, 25-16, courtesy of their reinforcements in Philippine Team member Joan Bunag and Erika Camille Verano along with former PHL youth mainstay Genie Sabas, Jusabelle Brillo, Rachel Hanna Singson and Danika Gendrauli.

The equally-tough Talisay City, on the other hand, overpowered Dalaguete, 25-8, 25-14, behind the powerful attacks of Jullette Mae Marikit and Florian Gutierrez.

Not to be outdone, Liloan thrashed Tuburan, 25-9, 29-27, through the exemplary performances of PHL team member Aiza Maizo and Jove Gonzaga from the University of St. La Salle (USLS)-Bacolod.

Catmon and Barili also barged into the winners' circle. Catmon defeated Minglanilla, 25-21, 25-17, while Barili won by default over Santa Fe. - THE FREEMAN
