CEBU, Philippines - Southwestern University (SWU) and University of the Visayas (UV) topped the beach volley competition of the 2011 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday at the Cebu White Sands Resort in Marigondon, Lapulapu City.

In the women's division, the SWU tandem of Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Princess Anne Pido overpowered Apple Eve Saraum and Regine Hermosa of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 21-15, 21-11 to clinch the title. SWU earlier beat USPF, 21-15, 21-13 in the opener of their best-of-three duel.

“Okay kaayo sila sa ilang teamwork, controlled nila ang dagan sa duwa. It's maybe because isa lang ilang kontra, so wala kaayo kinahanglan nga changes sa ilang dinuwaan and no pressure at all,” said SWU coach Jordan Paca.

“Naa lang mi gi-target nga tawo as one of our strategies. Sila (USPF) gyud ang maglabaw una but eventually, maapsan ra gyud namo sila,” said Gendrauli, who won the first CESAFI beach volley women’s title along with Lorie May Layno.

In the men’s final, UV's Mike Abria and Eldizer Sagarino tamed USPF’s Edward Ybanez and Christopher Ryan Abut in straight sets, 22-20, 21-18.

With their victories, SWU and UV automatically earned the right to represent Cebu in the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Meet.  (FREEMAN)
