Aspiring pro triumphs in Danao slugfest

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - Rey Morales, a Palarong Pambansa medallist who wants to turn pro under the ALA Boxing Gym's fold, escaped with a 2-1 victory over Omega Boxing Club’s 55 kgs. bet Leford Lorito in the Manu-Manu Sa Fiesta Amateur Boxing Tournament in Danao City.

Morales, who arrived here in Cebu only last week, is 18 years old. He has the potential but still needs more exposure in amateur boxing and training at ALA Gym before he could finally enter the pro ranks.

Two other Negrense fighters, 54 kgs. Juren Labordo and 58 kgs.J ohn Rey Melligen, also pulled off impressive wins.

Labordo silenced another entry from Omega BC Jalile Payao, while Melligen defeated Mardy Muaña from Camotes Island both via 3-0 shutout.

On the other hand, University of the Visayas’ Dannlou Codilla dumped JP Atienda in another 54 kgs. action.

Cabancalan ended up with an even 2-2 win-loss record. 45 kgs. Polid Banal proved too much for Philippine-Australia’s Jeffrey Estrella, while 50 kgs. Cherwellan Cantel outsmarted Christian Bacolod, 2-1, in their encounter.

Talamban’s 50 kgs. entry Kevin Jake Cataraja prevailed over Cabancalan’s Jimboy Mayang, while Bais’ Richard Barrios won against JK Malupay in the 52 kgs. division.  (FREEMAN)
