Amazing display

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

Those who went to the Cebu Country Club last Saturday were treated to display of golfing skills by Jay Bayron, who successfully defended his title in the Aboitiz Invitational.

Jay’s come-from-behind victory, which he did by shooting a course-record of six-under-par 64, was truly amazing that even his fellow competitors were mesmerized.

I had the chance to see Jay play up close during the pro-am event earlier in the week and did see sparks of brilliance even if he was just taking it easy and using the opportunity to measure the course.

Cebu Country Club has often been referred as a relatively easy course for the pros, but the course, which was shorted to a par-70 and the sleek greens, changed the way many look at it.

The members of the club, who had the opportunity to play early in the morning and late afternoon during the tournament days, realized that their home course is one that can also break the hearts and minds of many pros.

The 14th Corn Tee will start today at the Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu course in Barangay Pulangyuta, Danao City.

Why corn?

This is because the area used to be planted with corn before it was made into a golf course by Peter ‘Maestro’ Chiongbian assisted by one of his favorite students, Matias ‘Gene’ Aznar IV.

The Corn Tee is the club’s signature tournament much like The Coral of Cebu Country Club, The View Invitational of Alta Vista, and The Island Tee of Mactan.

What makes it different from the other signature tournaments of Cebu-based clubs is that it is a four-man team event – one member and three guests form one team.

Good luck to all the players and kudos to the organizers led by Club Filipino president Boboy Durano, vice president Evans Tumaliwan, and golf chairman Jiji Gullas.

I’m sorry that I can’t join you guys, but I’ll be going to Danao for next month’s Ateneo-La Salle Golf Classic.

Have you signed up for the ERUF 161 Run set this Sunday? If you haven’t then what are you waiting for?

This event, aside from being a chance to run and enjoy, will help a very noble cause – to raise funds for the purchase of portable defibrillators.

ERUF, which is also celebrating its silver anniversary this Sunday, has saved countless lives not only in Cebu, but also in other parts of the country.

Supporting the race, where the entry fee for the 12-K, 6-K, and 3-K distances is P250, is like helping save lives also.

Register now at any of the three ERUF bases.
