SBC Forum survives SWU, UV sweeps games in 3rd BTC Cup

-

CEBU, Philippines - Sotero B. Cabahug (SBC) Forum for Literacy overpowered Southwestern University (SWU), 8-5, in a critical in a do-or-die match to secure a ticket for the 3-cornered playoff at 12-under next week in the 3rd BTC Cup.

The same is true with the University of the Visayas (UV) as the 12-under team of coach Jay Mar Canoy swept its last two games yesterday at the Banilad Town Centre (BTC).

The Lancers at 16-under moved a notch closer to a playoff slot in the 3-on-3 series by default to forge a do-or-die match today against St. Alphonsus Catholic School (SACS)-B.

Ram Denzylle Pepito and Daniel Selpa took turns scoring 4 points each in carrying their 12-under SBC Forum-B team to victory marking a 4-0 win-loss card and dropping SWU to 3-1.

Even if the Forums of coach Ain Latonio lose their last game today, a win by either SWU or PAREF Springdale School-B that also holds a 3-1 record would not matter having defeated Springdale last Aug. 13.

Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC) needed the boost in standing at 4-0 by way of a default win against Springdale-C when the team battles with St. John of Kenty School today.

Should the players of former Consolacion Mayor Camilo Go win against CIC, the Kenty boys will just have to defeat Springdale-C to grab from CIC the rights to get into the playoffs if they finish with a similar 4-1 record.

Lyder Kent Canieso produced 5 points in bringing the UV 12-under squad to victory against SBC Forum-C, 12-3, and pumped out 8 rapid fires in trouncing San Isidro Parish School (SIPS), 9-2.

Meanwhile, the SACS 14-under team secured the advantage in Division A for a crossover twice-to-beat playoff by overcoming what came to be a strong challenge from Benedicto College, 7-4.

The SIPS-B Tamaraws of coach Virgilio Godinez grabbed the No. 2 slot to challenge the eventual top-seed in Division B after it edged Center for International Education (CIE)-A, 4-3.

Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion (CIC) kept the top-seed position in Division B by overwhelming the boys of coach Arnold Sy in CIE-B, 7-3.

The boys of coach Frankie Lastimoso will have to deal with the third-seed Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS)-B of coach Jason Velez today to gain the twice-to-beat advantage.

PCGS-B will have to win the game if it wants to grab the advantage, or kiss their hopes for the playoff goodbye. A PCGS-B win will also mean kicking SIPS-A out of the playoff and lose to CIC the chance to challenge SACS.

In the 16-under, SACS-B prevailed to meet UV for a doe-or-die match after prevailing in a shootout with Benedicto College (BC) with Paul John Casquejo making the goal.

Springdale-A stained UV with a 2-1 loss in their shootout match, yet the latter got a free win record by default against University of Southern Philippines (USP)-A.

Should UV win against SACS-B today, the Lancers will enter the playoff automatically.

However, if SACS-B wins over UV, the boys of coach Roel Caballes will prevail only if St. Louis College-Cebu - Alpha loses to USP-A today.

A win by the Alpha Cardinals if SACS-B defeats UV will carry themselves to the playoffs having defeated SACS-B on Aug. 6.

On the other hand, SACS-A may have stayed at No. 1 in Division C after a shootout win against USP-B but its fate for the playoff lies in the hands of CIE-B inched higher in standings after defeating PCGS-A, 7-4.

Should CIE-B win against win-less SPLC-B today, the Lions will grab the ticket for the playoffs as they defeated SACS-A last Aug. 13.

SIPS-B sealed its playoff berth despite losing to PCGS-B, 3-7, after the same PCGS-B team bowed earlier to Cebu Cherish School (CCS)-B, 6-12, that also failed in a shootout against Springdale-B.

While both SIPS-B and Springdale-B finished with a 4-1 card, the former beat the latter last Aug. 7.

In the 10-under category, St. Paul Learning Center (SPLC)-A swept wins against Sacred Heart School (SHS) Ateneo de Cebu-A, 7-5, and Springdale, 4-3, and secured its position as the No. 1 seeded team.

SPLC-B and SIPS also secured their ticket to the playoffs by winning separate games with team-in-waiting SHS-Ateneo-B.

SPLC-B crushed PCGS, 9-2, and threw away the opportunity for the young Blue Lions to get into the playoff.

It will be a crucial game between SPLC-B and SIPS to determine their standings in the playoff.

A win by SPLC-B will place the team at the No. 2 slot with SHS-Ateneo at 3rd and SIPS at 4th. Otherwise, the standings will be determined by quotient if the three end the elimination with identical 4-2 record.
