Calderon, Rojo stamp classes in 5th leg of Kartzone series
CEBU, Philippines - Jette Calderon and Vince Adrian Rojo of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu made their school proud again after dominating their respective classes in the fifth leg of 2011 Kartzone Series at Kartzone racing circuit.
With some valuable lessons taken from their recent stint in the Asian Karting Open Championships in Cavite, Calderon emerged as the top KT expert rider anew and overall champion in the fifth leg while Rojo won the mini ROK title.
Their victories came even sweeter as they had to hurdle several obstacles before winning the title.
Missing the qualifying heat due to an important activity at school, Calderon was placed at the back of the grid while rivals Peterson Lim and John Tristan ‘ JT’ Gullas started from first and third, respectively.
From ninth, Calderon outmanuevered one karter to another until a mechanical trouble got him into trouble.
In the ensuing heat, Calderon had to start from behind again, yet Calderon’s “surgical method” in driving allowed him to go as far as sixth spot for a better placing in the final heat.
Knowing it was his last chance, Calderon displayed aggressiveness, zooming in from sixth to the frontline. He overtook Lim and Gullas for the top spot.
Rojo also had to deal his opponents well before clinching the top honors.
Rojo started behind pole setter Liam Sacal, yet, his determination to take the lead was unwavering as he did not only got the top spot at the end of the first heat, but in all three heats to win the title.
Sacal wound up second while Jarond Messina and Rex King settled for third and fourth, respectively.
The outcome of the latest leg also paved the way for Calderon to pad his lead in the 'Karter of the Year' race with 86 points, ten points ahead of Peterson Lim. Gullas is currently at third with 62 points. (FREEMAN)
