'Rebel' triumphs in Cortes boxing

CEBU, Philippines - Rebel Reyes outlasted Ighan Noveno in the battle of neophytes during the revival of the Mayor Jonas Cortes Cup Boxing At the Park at the Mandaue City Plaza Square the other night.

Reyes and Noveno, both from Cabancalan Elementary School, applied everything they learned but Reyes was more aggressive to hack out a clear 3-0 victory in the 30 kgs. division.

Two other Cabancalan boxers fought against each other, with Ferde San Roque winning against JK Malupay, 3-0, in the 48 kgs. class, while their teammate Jimboy Mayang triumphed in the 48 kgs. category over Flores Boxing’s Welmark Dignos, 3-0.

Melmark Dignos made up for his brother’s loss by dumpling Sanai’s Benjic Manatad in the 44 kgs., but another FBC bet Ariel Sibay lost to Ramil Casañares in the 32 kgs. class.

 On the other hand, Mardy Muaña of Camotes spoiled the comeback of Maguikay’s Brandon Tabares after posting a 3-0 victory in the 55 kgs.division.

Bacolod’ John Rey Melligen bounced back from defeat he suffered earlier by pulling off a 2-1 win in the 58 kgs. class against Elmo Traya of Consolacion.

Melligen’s fellow Negrense, JP Atieda, hurdled his assignment against Maramag, Bukidnon’s Rolando Lingaw-Lingaw in the 55 kgs. division, while Traya’s teammate outsmarted Bais City’s Richard Barrios in the 50 kgs

In the other bouts, Janriel Jecong saved the day for the University of the Visayas after prevailing over Philippine Australian Boxing Club’s Raul Tarona Jr. in the 34 kgs.,37 kgs. bet Rommel Tuñacao lost to Rhezon Tarona also of PABC, while 44 kgs. Bryan Redemio bowed to Matgarito Moya of Sanai Boxing Club. (FREEMAN)
