Don Bosco scores double in football

- Caecent No-ot Magsumbol -

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Don Bosco Technology Center scored a double victory in football in the 2011 Milo Little Olympics last night.

DBTC dethroned Abellana National School, 3-1, in their championship game.

The wards of coach Glenn Ramos had a longer rest prior to the final match. Ramos also had a chance to do a final scouting of their opponents during the semifinals.

ANS had to deal Compostela National High School, composed mainly of players from Don Bosco Boys Home, to get the other finals slot.

Coach Ramos was a bit worried that speed and experience of ANS players would hinder their title bid.

But DBTC’s junior squad found ways to overcome that disadvantage to impress their new sponsor, Cebuana Lhuillier.

Christian Agot broke the ice for the Bosconians on the 6th minute.

Five minutes later, the game was back at square one when John Gomora equalized for ANS. The score remained tied at 1-all at the bend.

In the second half, Joseph Lorenzo Mercado put DBTC up by one with a goal on the 44th minute hitting his mark from the right flank.

Fatigue set in on the players of both teams as the game plodded on with DBTC’s Valentin Calvo and ANS’ Keith Arranguez both suffered cramps.

Calvo managed to stay in the game, but Arranguez had to be replaced, which proved to have further helped the Don Bosco side.

Calvo broke through the defense on the 51st minute to give his team the cushion, 3-1, which eventually became the final score.

Two players were booked later in the game. Allain Abella got a yellow card while Peter Diaz was booted out of the game with a red card, but this did not anymore change the outcome for DBTC.

Earlier yesterday, DBTC’s grade school squad scored a convincing 6-1 triumph against Canduman Elementary School.

The youg Bosconians victory, however, was just like a bonus already as they dethroned defending champion Paref-Springdale in their last elimination round assignment.

Those who scored for DBTC were Glen Thomas Ramos at the 2nd and 39th minutes, Jon Joseph Reña on the 14th and 34th, Enrich Rafael Orale on the 21st, and Mark Uriel Unabia on the 32nd.

Vincent Yonting scored the lone one for Canduman on the 47th.

Bright Academy placed third in the elementary level over Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus while Compostela got the bronze in the secondary level. - THE FREEMAN
