Baby Lancers repulse CEC Dragons
CEBU, Philippines - A more accurate free throw shooting saved the day for the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers yesterday beating defending champion Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 62-47, in come-from-behind fashion at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Baby Lancers never threw in the towel despite being down by as much as ten points in the third canto, 25-35 and instead methodically clawed back.
UV pressured CEC’s shooters and went on to a 5-0 start in the final canto to eventually take the lead, 43-41 after a basket by Reeve Ugsang.
Ugsang’s basket was followed by a jumper by by Joseph Peralta and UV never looked back from there to go up by eight, 51-43.
The Baby Lancers also took advantage of the chances given to them on the free throw line as well as their three-point sniping.
Peralta and Ugsang led UV with 13 points apiece while Ron Marvis Dennison, who was part of the furious fourth quarter rally, added 12 points.
James Neil Sumayang led the Dragons with 14 points.
The Dragons, last year, was the biggest surprise of the league with a 180-degree turn around from being the whipping boys to champions.
This year, a repeat of that would be tough with only a few holdovers left from the champion team.
