CEBU, Philippines - Baseball in Cebu is expected to thrive further as more public school teachers have shown interest in coaching student-athletes by joging the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC)-sponsored coaching and officiating seminar recently at the Cebu City Sports Center.
A total of 40 teachers joined the Major League Base-ball seminar held in cooperation with the Department of Education, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association and the Cebu City govern-ment, according to event facilitator and Fastball Sports-venture general manager Jesse Bernad.
RP coaches Wilfredo Hidalgo, Jr., Catalino Leron and MLB's Dave Panese conducted the two-day seminar that tackles the philo-sophy of baseball as well as the basics of throwing, catching, pitching and hitting. Actual drills were also given so that the participants will fully understand the theories imparted to them.
It was found out that some teachers know the basic of the sport, but needed to be updated on new techniques of coa-ching and playing baseball.
Bernad said some were really “be-ginners” but now have broader knowledge of the popular batted sport. – THE FREEMAN
