Abarintos, Cugtas lead Independence golf winners

CEBU, Philippines - Junior golfer Sir Cross Abarintos and lawyer Marlo Cugtas led the winners of the Independence Day Golf Tournament played last Saturday at the Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu course in barangay Pulangyuta, Danao City.

Abarintos fired a net score of 58 strokes off a gross of 86 to run away with the lowest net honors.

Cugtas fired 73 strokes on the course designed by the late Peter "Maestro' Chiongbian to take the lowest gross plum.

Ramon 'Boboy' Durano IV, president of CFIC, said that a total of 124 players took part in the 18-hole tournament, which followed the member-guest format.

The champion for division I was the tandem of Hospicio 'Razi' Razon and Marlo Cugtas combining for 127 strokes. Razon had a net 63 while Cugtas made 64.

Razon's other team took the runner-up honors for the premiere category as his 63 was matched with the net 68 of Oscar Cornelio for a total of 131 strokes.

Kim Jae Eun was another double winner as his first team took the division 2 title with a total of 123 strokes. Kim shot a net score of 63 while Park Sung Kyoo had a net 60

Kim's 63 plus the 63 of Hwang Kyu Bok for a total of 126 strokes earned them the runner-up honors.

Joel Abella and Lawrence Chian topped division 3 with a total of 136 strokes. Abella had a net score of 73 while Chian added 63.

The runner-up honors went to Larry Ocheda and Romy Hipolito, who had the same total, but lost in the countback. Ocheda shot a net 61 while Hipolito had a net score of 75.

The awards ceremony of the tournament was held at the CFIC clubhouse on the 16th floor of the FGU-Ayala Life Building inside the Cebu Business Park. (FREEMAN)
