CEBU, Philippines - Runners will be taking a vital role in Cebu’s reforestation project as more participants would means more trees to plant when the Run 2 Plant 4 Greenin Philippines unfolds on June 25 in different cities and municipalities here.
The event will be held simultaneously in 51 municipalities and component cities under the province of Cebu.
The central event, however, will take place in a five-hectare forest land in Candulawan, Talisay City, the area of which is within the Mananga watershed.
The organizing Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Incorporated (RAFI) through its Green, Redemption and Expansion of Natural Resources Initiative in the Philippines (GREENIN) program is targeting to plant 12,500 native seedlings to be planted that time Candulawan and over a hundred seedlings for the entire province.
According to RAFI, the event also serves as the kick-off of the implementation of the National Greening Program (NGP) in Cebu wherein 2,900 hectares of denuded forestland is expected to be reforested.
The GREENIN Philippines Program will be planting five million native tree seedlings in this targeted area for the next five years.
As the central event's running part, the action will have three legs with the starting leg covering eight kilometers starting at the Talisay City Hall, then the second leg with five kilometers at Vista Grande and the final leg with 1 kilometer of running ending at sitio Iba in Candulawan, the tree-planting site.
Post-planting activities together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the different local government units, other partners and volunteers will also be set to ensure the survival of the trees. - (THE FREEMAN)
