Court's almost done

I got word yesterday from Roger Abella, who is also one of the Cebu Sports Hall of Famers, about somebody, who he believes is worthy to be enshrined.

I am withholding the name of the person until we can deliberate whether he is qualified or not as Roger also promised to provide the proper documents that the committee to screen those to be inducted to the hall of fame would need.

If you missed yesterday’s column, I am now working double time to revive the Cebu Sports Hall of Fame on instructions of Mayor Michael Rama.

If you know people, who might be qualified please feel free to send email to [email protected] or [email protected].

These people have to be retired from either being athletes or coaches.

If you have already forgotten, the Davis Cup tie between the Philippines and Japan will be held early this March at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.

The last time we were at the resort last year, work was yet to commence on the court, but last Monday, we saw that only a little more work is needed for it to be ready for the event.

General (manager) Efren Belarmino of Plantation Bay, yes my favorite general from Mactan, said that the court and the bleachers would be ready very soon.

He also asked for some ideas where he would set up a place for the photographers to get a good view of the court, which is of international standards.

While it seems that Plantation Bay has been working very hard to get things done ahead of schedule for the Davis Cup tie, it seems that a lot of work also needs to be done on the route leading to the resort, which has been voted one of the 20 best in Asia for the past three years, according to a sign on the lobby.

The roads need to be fixed and the Lapu-Lapu City government has to address the traffic problem to make it easier for the fans to troop to the venue.

I expect many tennis families to be going to Plantation Bay for this event, which runs for three days.

We never had a tennis event as big as this as far as I can recall.

We did have one international tennis tournament played at the Camp Lapu-Lapu courts many years ago, but it wasn’t of the same caliber as the Davis Cup.

See you at Plantation Bay for these three sporty days of March. Even if you have to drive to the resort everyday for this tournament, I’m sure it will be worth it.

More than a major tennis event, this one is something that is seen to boost the popularity of the sport in this part of the country and would also encourage more parents to get their kids playing tennis.

Raul Rendon, treasurer Edgar Gica, auditor Marlon Mesina, and directors Earl Perez, Glenn Java, Teodis Buma-at, Greg Mercado, Warren Te, and Nestor Lumapas.

I was also elected secretary of the organization, which is for Certified Security Professionals.
