Talisay, Catmon belles start hot

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay and Catmon belles hacked out resounding victories to kick off their campaign in the quarterfinal round of the 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Catmon pummeled Tuburan in straight sets, 25-7, 25-14, behind the powerful attacks of Melanie Silvestre, Ma. Cherry Petalcorin, Gretchel Soltones, Athena Sucalit, Catherine Marquez and Ma. Abigail Praca.

Reigning City Cluster champion Talisay, on the other hand, also served early notice of its serious championship bid with a merciless 25-10, 25-7 thrashing of Pilar.

Among those who figured prominently for Talisay's victory were Mechelle Matuguina, Jullett Mae Marikit, Florian Guttierez, Marissa Lagancia, Hariette Abastillas and RP team member, Nerissa “Nene” Bautista.

Not to be outdone, Mandaue blasted off Alegria, 25-5, 25-10 through the efforts of former RP youth member Genie Sabas and RP team member Jusabelle Brillo along with Erika Camille Verano, Danika Yolanda Gendrauli and Kennette Garces.

In the other games, Liloan and Minglanilla also succeeded in clobbering their respective opponents. Liloan overpowered Barili, 25-11, 25-13, while Minglanilla outclassed Tabuelan, 25-16, 25-17. (FREEMAN)
