Carlsen dominates Deep Blue chess team tourney

CEBU, Philippines - Team Carlsen completed a 3-0 shutout of Kasparov in the final round to rule the latest edition of the Deep Blue D' Woodpusher Chess Team Tournament at the Deep Blue Chess Club located at the second level of SM City-Cebu.

Carlsen, manned by Apollo Dante, Allen Borbon and Ferdinand Carlos, easily wiped out Karparov's Mandy Baria, Manuel Abucay and Saturnino Sanchez to finish the five-round Swiss system competition with 13.0 points.The Carlsen trio also automatically emerged as the gold medallists in their respective boards.

Spassky of Miguel Banibane, Gerry Rallos and Jovert Uy placed second with 9.0 points, while Kamsy of Romeo Lumanog, Mark Alvarado, and Roger Pelose wound up third with 8.0 points.

The rest of the participants were Maggi Dionson, Felix Balbuena and Condrad Pasion of Team Anand and Randy Cabuncal, Freddie Casagan and Ramon Tapia of Team Sokolov.

Supervised by international arbiter Marvin Ruelan assisted by Tony Cabibil, the one-day event was made possible through the support of Carlos Tan, Jun Mendoza, Maggi Dionson and Edgar Hortelano. (THE FREEMAN)
