Mandaue, Liloan stay unbeaten in GUV Cup

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City and Liloan bolstered their chances of booking quarterfinal tickets after staying undefeated in both men and women’s divisions in Cluster 6 action of the 6th Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup at the Panphil B. Frasco Memorial Sports Complex in Liloan, Cebu.

Reigning men’s champion Mandaue fended off Cordova, 25-17, 25-12 and Compostela, 25-15, 25-16 behind the efforts of reinforcements Edward Ybanez and Jesriel Pino along with Edward Carlos Tecson, Roderick Arenasa, Joselito Moncada and last year’s MVP Ramil Espinosa.

The municipal cluster titlist and host Liloan spikers also sustained their hot streak, whipping Consolacion, 25-18, 25-23 before surviving a three-set thriller against Cordova, 15-25, 25-18, 25-20.

Jonrey Sasing spearheaded Liloan's triumph with a strong backing from Jade Becaldo and Jacky Yrog-irog.

In the distaff side, the Mandaue belles logged two victories at the expense of Cordova, 25-7, 25-19 and Compostela, 25-9, 25-20, while Liloan also nailed a twinkill over Consolacion, 25-11, 25-18 and Cordova, 25-11, 25-18.

In the other matches, Compostela nipped Consolacion 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 in the men’s bracket, while its female counterpart outclassed Consolacion 28-30, 25-15, 25-22.

The champion in both divisions will pocket P20, 000, while the runners-up will get P10, 000 plus a berth into the quarterfinals on December 11 at the Cebu International Convention Center. (THE FREEMAN)
