It has been a long time since that high school championship game between University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and Don Bosco Technology Center in the now defunct Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA), the organization that preceded the CESAFI.
I can't help but look back to that championship match-up in the 1994 season as I eagerly await the start of the championship series for the high school division of this year’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament between Cebu Eastern College and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
This year's finalists are two schools that were once considered as tournament minnows that have become whipping boys no more.
In 1994, the finale between USJ-R and DBTC that was eventually won by the Baby Jaguars was one that saw many of the alumni and parents getting involved in the sidelines of the Cebu school league.
I expect even much more enthusiasm in this match-up between SHS-AdC and CEC, which both got a big boost from their alumni in terms of putting up teams that can contend with perennial favorites— University of the Visayas and University of Cebu.
I am rooting for the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, which also have the support of the two Atenean Hearters in our home, my children.
Wilson Yu, who is a CEC alumnus, might have a problem deciding to cheer for his alma mater or that of his kids, who go to SHS-AdC.

Although the total gun ban is in effect due to the barangay elections set later this month, this has not stopped groups and individuals of thinking about holding competitions.
I recently received word from Atty. Michelle Mendez-Palmares, the president of the Philippine Society for Industrial Security (PSIS) Chapter here about the 1st Security Practitioners Shootfest at the NS Outdoor Range in Tawason, Mandaue City on November 21.
This is open to Certified Security Professionals (CSPs), private security practitioners, public security practitioners, public safety officers, members of the judiciary and lawyers and bankers.
The entry fee is pegged at only P500.
The event will follow the IDPA format and a series of lectures will be held for my fellow members of the PSIS-7.
There will be more information about the event soon, but I'm sure many are now excited to head to the firing range once the gun ban is lifted.
I'll keep you posted also as part of my duties as member of the society and the committee for the competition.
Security is everybody's concern and I did learn much in the course that I took leading to the certification. This competition will also be very interesting and I hope to see you there.
