Deep Blue rules Persimmon chessfest

CEBU, Philippines - Deep Blue Chess Club wiped out OPASCOR, 7-3, in the final round to clinch the championship of the Persimmon Plus Invitational Chess Team Tournament over the weekend at the Persimmon Condominium.

Deep Blue, composed of Miguel Banibane, Jongjong Melendrez, Jojo Canque, Jefferson Lendio, Apollo Dante, Romeo Lumanog, Ben Harayo, Mark Alvarado, Jovert Uy and Vicente Alvarado, topped the five-round Swiss system competition in convincing fashion with 39.5 points.

OPASCOR, manned by Fel Alasagas, Elmer Respecia, Piper Riveral, Albert Mula, Gege Dignos, Jr., Mark Alasagas, Gerry Dignos, Ricky Lucero, Tonie Riveral and Alvin Riveral, finished second with 28.0 points.

Aboitizland, on the other hand, outclassed Dakay Construction by just two points, 6-4, in the finale but that was all it needed to snatch the third place honors with 23.5 points.

The Aboitizland players include Ryan Villacorta, Maggi Dionson, Mandy Baria, Roger Pesole, Alfred Alido, Jade Garzon, Kristof Esmero, Earl Retuya, Wareen Carbalosa, and Noel Ermac.

The other participating companies in the Aboitizland Chess Club-sponsored event were the Visayas Electric Company (VECO) and Lear Marketing Corporation.

The two-day tilt was supervised by international arbiter Marvin Ruelan and Tony Cabibil. (FREEMAN)
