P1 million for ace in Corn Tee

CEBU, Philippines - A whopping P1 million is at stake for a hole-in-one in all par-3s in next week’s 2010 Corn Tee at the Club Filipino Incorporada de Cebu course in Pulangyuta, Danao City.

The quest for a million is dubbed as the Monterrazas de Cebu Challenge. In case more than one player will score an ace during the four-day event starting on September 8 and ending on the 11th, the prize will be equally shared.

This is a four-man team event where each squad must have one member of the club.

As of yesterday afternoon, only eight slots remain open. Entry fee is pegged at P10,000 per team.

Joselito ‘Jiji’ Gullas, the chairman of the tournament, said yesterday that there was a surge in registrants the past few days. “We’ll be happy to get a few more,” he said.

“We will be checking out the course tomorrow (today) to see to it that everything is ready. Those who would like to practice have until Monday as the course will be closed on Tuesday in preparation for the tournament,” he added.

A Skygo motorcycle is also at stake for an eagle on all par-5 holes. Gullas said that the motorcycle will be raffled off during the awards night on September 11 at the Budyong Hall of Casino Filipino-Mactan if it will not be won during the event.

He major backers of the tournament are Pagcor Cebu and Mactan along with Rep. Ramon ‘Red’ Durano VI, Cebu Mitsumi Inc., and the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Duros, Phoenix Petroleum, Duty Free Philippines, and Imperial Palace Waterpark, Resort and Spa complete the list of major sponsors.

The minor sponsors are Bank of Commerce, Smart, Foremost, Chinabank, Resorts World, Red Golf, Profood International Corp., and The Freeman.

Each team shall play two rounds within the four-day period. The Modified Stableford Scoring system will be used and all four players will count for the team total.

A club member can have more than one team.

The August 16 handicaps will be used, but those who are not members of any of the four clubs belonging to the regional handicapping network, must submit a club certified handicap.

The tournament committee reserves the right to modify the rules and other matters for the best interest of the tournament.

The Corn Tee is the annual member-guest tournament of the club, which is now headed by Ramon ‘Boboy’ Durano IV as its president. –THE FREEMAN
