Freeman Cebu Sports

My 'lazy' training partner

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The divorce seem to have done Tiger Woods good as he scored his best round since September 2009 by hitting 65 strokes to share the lead in the Barclays with Vaughn Taylor.

Of course, it’s too early to say that the world’s top golfer, based on the points rankings, is back in form, but then this is a good sign although many were not happy that his marriage ended.

The marital woes were probably a huge load to carry and the divorce somewhat eased the load. I am just guessing, but it is not surprising to see Tiger, who is known to have a superhuman skill when it comes to focusing on the task ahead, to be where he is now, because this is where we expect him to be most of the time.

There are still two rounds to play since the second round shall be played while this copy of The Freeman is being printed, so let’s wait and see what happens next.

I guess many people share this sad tale about a training partner that is not helping us work harder.

My training partner makes me lazy. He tells me to stay in bed longer and forego going out to bike when there is a slight drizzle or when the roads are wet from last night’s downpour.

The same guy used to push me a little harder when I was younger. During our training at the University of the Philippines Cebu Judo Club, my training partner would urge me to spend extra time trying to build stamina and studying throws.

The same training partner encouraged me to jump higher when I played volleyball and chase after the ball when playing football.

As the years passed so much has changed and I suddenly discover old injuries, which I never knew of until recently.

My ever-loyal training partner’s attitude has also changed. Many times, he refuses to wake me up even when I have made plans the night before to go out and bike for about an hour and enjoy the fresh air of my town’s mountain barangays.

The same training partner doesn’t bother to tell me to try to go to bed earlier or eat dinner several hours before bedtime and not when I get home late at night from the office.

The passing years seem to have made him more tolerant of laziness and it is difficult to work out a common schedule for me and my training partner, but we’re trying to find ways to make our team work again.

Many employers say that familiarity often makes your employee think that he can get lazy and I guess I have this problem with my training partner. The big problem is, I can’t fire him, because that training partner is me.
