Need for control

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The general assembly for the 6th Governor Gwendolyn Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup will be held today at the Cebu International Convention Center.

The GUV Cup is one event that we Cebuanos should be proud of since it is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, competitions for the sport in the country.

The huge cash prizes that are being offered are just the icing on the cake. The GUV Cup has been a venue to discover talents and for the various cities and towns to develop a volleyball program in their locality.

I remain hopeful that some day, other sporting events would also get the same chance to discover and develop talents.

One thing that the GUV Cup is very proud of are the players, who are now scholars in the various schools after they were picked by the coaches while taking part in the tournament.

I just hope that whatever differences there are in politics will not interfere with the development of sports.

Running has become a very big fad that so many people want to hold races or fun runs as a means to raise funds for their organizations.

While we welcome the interest of many people to hold events, there has to be a system put in place to prevent conflicts in schedules and to maintain the integrity of the sport.

The effort of the Cebu City Sports Commission to look into this is a good start, but then this can even be made easier if the organizers themselves would try to work things out to comply with standards set by the governing body for road races.

With more people being bitten by the running bug, I also hope that we can also develop future long distance running stars.

It is important to put in place measures to prevent conflicts in race schedules so that the participants would not also get burned out and to allow maximum participation.

We can't stop people from making the most out of a fad, but then that is also one reason why the sudden surge of popularity for a certain sports is just that - a passing fashion.

If we want to sustain the development of running, then work to coordinate efforts for the development of the sports has to start now and not only when it fades out into oblivion.
