Freeman Cebu Sports

Green vs. Blue IX

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

This year’s edition of the La Salle-Ateneo Golf Classic Cebu is seen to be much bigger than the previous eight as the Manila edition of the tournament has ceased to exist.

The Cebu tournament normally draws about 80 participants or less, but this year, organizers think that they can hit more than a hundred participants.

To qualify for the tournament, you need to have studied in a La Salle Brothers or a Jesuit school for one school year.

Entry fee is P1,500 if you are a member of Cebu Country Club and P2,500 if you are not. The organizers are also giving the players an option to play two rounds with the best round counting, but for this you’ll have to pay an extra P500 if a member of the host club and P1,500 for non members.

Ateneo has ruled this tournament winning seven of the eight overall titles at stake. La Salle hopes to win it again this year, but as always the odds are stacked against the Greenies.

Ateneo can count on the many golfers from the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (formerly SHS-Boys and SHS-Jesuit), who form a big core of talent.

This year, both teams expect reinforcements from other parts of the country, which should make the competition more interesting.

Class A will be for those with handicaps from 0 to 9, B for those with 10 to 19 and C for those 20 and above.

If you have no club certified handicap, you can play in the open category, which shall be using the Blind Callaway handicapping format.

For those who still have questions about the tournament and for early registration, you may contact Bobby Martinez at 0918-9161108.

If you happen to be one of those following Major League Baseball (MLB), I’m sure you are also eager to see Alex Rodriguez hit his 600th career homerun even if you are not a fan of the New York Yankees.

Rodriguez or A-Rod has been stuck at 599 homeruns for several games now and what is worse is that he is not even making any hits to compound the situation.

A-Rod hit his 599th homerun last July 22 and since then, the baseball community has been eagerly waiting for him to pass the 600 HR milestone.

We do get a lot of baseball games on ESPN, which is good for baseball fans like me and my son, Nico, and my buddies from UP High, Kerrwin Sanchez and Jesse Bernad.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings to my cousin, Denden Motus, wife of fellow sports columnist Bobby Motus. She turned a year older yesterday along with sports ed Manny Villaruel and US President Barack Obama.

Today is a special day as me and my better (not bitter) half Evelyn, celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary and tomorrow she also celebrates her birthday.

Birthday greetings for today go to Viner Ignacio and to RCTV’s Gwen Reyes.

Advance greetings also go to chef Marco Anzani, who is celebrating tomorrow and would also be launching his new cooking show over SkyCable TV.

More power to all of you!
