GUV Cup organizers allow imports for all

- Marigold Lebumfacil -

CEBU, Philippines - Imports will now be allowed for all teams that will be taking part in the 6th season of the Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup.

With this new development, Governor Gwen Garcia is challenging all the cities and municipalities to use this chance to uplift their teams.

Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) president Jun San Juan said that the reinforcement of teams is one way of motivating them.

“After how many years, the teams which will emerge victorious or will land at the top four spots were just the same teams. With this change now, we hope to have new teams that will be on the roster of winning teams and hopefully new champions this year,” said San Juan.

In a meeting of team coaches and managers along with CEVA officers and Gov. Garcia, the other day at the Capitol Social Hall, the new qualifications for eligibility were also discussed.

San Juan said that a player is already eligible to play if his or her parents or grandparents came from the city or municipality he or she’s playing for.

A player is also allowed to play in a certain squad if he or she has one year residency in that certain municipality or city either through marriage or employment.

Attendance wise, CEVA is giving their best in encouraging all the cities and municipalities to participate this season or improve last year’s number of participating teams in both men and women’s division.

To recall, the GUV Cup volleyball tournament started in 2005 and was intended for the women. In 2008, all the 52 cities and municipalities of Cebu were able to join and last year was the inclusion of the men’s division.

“This is a new set up and a fresh start to improve the standing of the teams,” said San Juan. (FREEMANSPORTS)
