Landis's confession

ALLEZ - Jose Vicente Araneta -

Last week, defrocked Tour de France champion finally admitted that he used performance enhancing drugs all along. He also said that Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimmer and Dave Zabriskie, his former teammates at US POSTAL, also doped. He also said that Johan Bruyneel, US POSTAL (currently RADIO SHACK) team director encourage the use of PED's and that Andy Rihs, the owner of team PHONAK, the team he rode when he "won" the Tour in 2006, also tolerated doping.

That's what I'd call fingers a-pointing but it's nothing but a load of stinking fish! If he had 'fessed up 4 years ago, it'd been a bombshell but said today, it sounds more of a sound bite from a desperate man. His actions isn't going to help clean up the sport. In fact, he is doing the exact opposite.

I have defended Floyd before but with this latest expose, he just dug a hole so deep that he has no hope of climbing out. He has zero credibility and everybody who has at stake in cycling is trying to pedal away from him.

In the court of law, liars are bad witnesses. Whether Floyd is telling the truth or not, it really doesn't matter. If we thought he damaged cycling when he tested positive as the 2006 Tour champion, think about what he is doing now.

Doped Bicycles

"Curioser" is the report that the UCI, the governing body of cycling, is investigating reports that some bicycles in the professional peloton are equipped with motors hidden inside the tubes that aid in powering the bicycle during the first 5 hours of a race. The rider will then change to a clean bicycle later in the race making the rider fresher than his rivals during crunch time.

The Materials Unit of the UCI has confirmed that some teams are suspected of using such devices and (gasp!) scanners are being used to detect such machines inside the bicycle tubes.

Nino vs. Rolly

The much anticipated duel between the best MTBr in the country Nino Surban and upstart Rolly Cabaluna didn't produce much action. For one, both riders are genuinely down to earth. It's their respective supporters that love to talk. Second, I think Nino has a healthy respect of Rolly that instead of trying to drop the latter, he just followed him around and beat him in the sprint.

The race also told me of two things. One, Nino is still the best MTBr out there. Two, Rolly is a lot better than the rest who raced like they were the Atlanta Hawks. Third, Jan Mier, the son of former RP team standout Rene Mier, is probably the next best thing out there for Cebu cycling.

Finally, I was proved right about the Cleveland Cavaliers and proven wrong with the Orlando Magic. David Stern is licking his lips anticipating an LA-Boston Finals which would be more interesting than an LA-Orlando match-up. LA in 7! – THE FREEMAN
