The colors that matter

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

Monday’s electoral exercise may have left many sweating, but let us allow for some hitches as the country embarked on an attempt to fully automate our elections. There were problems and there were many who lost their cool, but in general I believe it was a success.

My wife, mother-in-law and I woke up early last Monday to make it to the polling precinct when it opens. In less than an hour we were done and were home to watch how many other people suffered lining up under the heat of the sun to vote or worse to look for their names on the list.

The names have long been posted, so it would have helped much if you were just diligent enough to check long before the day of the elections.

Just like taking part in sports, you have to be ready. It might be a bit difficult, but exercising your right to vote is participating in the democratic process of choosing our country’s and local government unit’s ‘leaders.

Our candidates may not have all won, but this is not the time to dwell on the rivalries that were made during the campaign period where colors have become political statements.

To the winners, congratulations! To the losers, it’s time to work with those who won so we can move forward as a nation.

Let us remove the barriers that the political colors had put up and think of the country’s tri-colors as we move forward.

I felt very battered last Monday.

First, the San Antonio Spurs lost the Phoenix Suns and were swept in the NBA Western Conference semifinals.

Then later that day, the New York Yankees were dumped by the Boston Red Sox.

Something else was awfully wrong when the poll results came out that night.

Now, I’ll stick to sports.

Almost everything is set for The View Invitational at Alta Vista Golf and Country Club on May 20 to 23.

The golf bags that would be given away to the participants are due to arrive anytime, if they haven’t arrived yet, and all slots have long been filled up.

This year, the organizers did not have a problem filling up the slots and even had to put many on the wait list due to the huge turnout.

It’s time to head back to the driving range.

MILESTONES: Belated birthday greetings go to Jill Gaite, who turned a year older last Monday.

Belated greetings also go to my very good friend from back our grade school days, Cecilia Evardo, Femy Navarro, Sigrid Tigol-Reyes, Love Joy Malicay, Joy Quintana-Gollon, and Lara Naomi Verdan-Agua, who all turned a year older yesterday.

Today’s greetings go to Jules Balaoro and Mark Garcia, who are celebrating today.

Congratulations also to my childhood buddy Councilor Robert John ‘Jojo’ Selma, who made it a number one councilor of Minglanilla and also to Councilor Dave John B. Karamihan, who also topped the polls in Balamban.
