MANILA, Philippines – Central Visayas added five more golds in its treasure vault through karatedo, taekwondo and lawn tennis in the second day of action in the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) 2010 National Games here at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Kennex Abadia, Israel Abarquez and Amiel Ayaay of the University of San Jose-Recoletos and Lowell Lloyd Cañete of the University of San Carlos (USC) powered CV to a golden finish in men’s lawn tennis event with a dominating victory over Region XII.

On the distaff side, CV bets of Sallydine Siso, Lovely Soquiño, Jeneveb Petecio and Julie-an Jopia could only settle for bronze.

Ann Marie de la Riarte, on the other hand, became CV’s first triple gold medallist after she topped the women’s 50-kilogram individual kata competition yesterday.

In swimming, the Cevees only had one silver from Claudine Candia of USC in the women’s 100m butterfly (one minute and 16 seconds) and three bronzes, two from Paula Vega of the University of Cebu (UC) via the 800m freestyle (10 minutes and 29 seconds) and 100m freestyle (one minute and five seconds). The other bronze was turned over by Jess Arriola of USC in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 19 minutes and eight seconds.

In basketball, the University of San Carlos-manned women’s basketball team made an impressive start after pinning down defending champion Calabarzon, 70-62. The Carolinians followed it up with a 68-42 thrashing of Region IX.

In beach volley, Mary Luilyn Pacinio and Crystal Buelvan extended their winning streak to four at the expense of Region 1, 21-12, and Region IX, 21-4.
